Women’s empowerment & support · Inspired by Deborah

Come and sit beneath the palm.

The Palm is a place where women find support, encouragement and belonging. Whatever season you are in, there is a seat here for you.

“She held court under the Palm of Deborah… and the Israelites went up to her.”
Judges 4:5
About the Palm

Who we are

The Palm is an empowerment and support group for women. Our name comes from a woman in the Bible called Deborah. She was a leader and a judge at a difficult time for her people, and she didn’t meet them in a palace. She sat beneath a palm tree, and people came to her there for wisdom, help and a fair hearing.

We love that picture. Deborah reminds us that anyone can make space for another person. You don’t need a title or the perfect words. You can pull up a chair, listen, and walk with someone through a hard season.

That is what The Palm is for: a place to gather, to be heard and to grow stronger together.

Rooted in Christian values of love, compassion and hope, we welcome every woman exactly as she is, whatever her faith or background.

  • GatheringDeborah’s palm became a meeting place where people came for help.
  • RestAfter a hard journey, Israel rested at Elim, a place of springs and palm trees. Exodus 15:27
  • ResilienceIn a storm the palm bends without breaking, and rises again.
  • HopePalm branches were waved in joy and welcome. John 12:13
  • Thriving with purpose“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree.” Psalm 92:12
Our hope

Our hope is that every woman will find a place to rest, feel supported, and thrive through life’s transitions.

You are welcome whether you are going through a difficult season or simply looking for connection, encouragement and purpose. Come as you are, to sit, be strengthened and refreshed.

Meet Zelda

Zelda is a mother of three who knows that life brings both highs and lows. Through seasons of change, including divorce, bereavement and health scares, she learned how much it matters to have people who will sit with you, listen and help you find your feet again.

Those experiences inspired her to start The Palm, an empowerment and support group for women navigating life’s transitions. Her motherly calling is simple: to help every woman feel loved and welcome.

At The Palm, you can share as much or as little as you choose. Women learn from one another, encourage one another and grow through change together.

Personal story

Finding purpose in pain

“After 16 years of being someone’s wife, I remember sitting with the reality that this part of my life had come to an end.”

Read the story

My identity changed, and so did many parts of my life. I faced financial pressure, childcare challenges and the stigma that can come with divorce. I wasn’t prepared for how difficult that season would be, and it was hard to imagine that anything good could come from it.

In the middle of that pain, I began reading about Deborah. In a difficult time for Israel, people came to her beneath a palm tree for guidance and help. Her story challenged me to look beyond my own struggles and consider how I might support other women.

Little by little, things began to fall into place. I saw doors open and women find support. In the middle of my pain, I began to discover purpose. God’s love grew in me a desire to reach out to other women and help create a place that could be an anchor of hope.

I’m still walking through healing, growing in strength and finding peace. That is what I hope for every woman who comes to The Palm: a place to be heard, encouraged and supported as she finds her own way forward.

Advice

Supporting a grieving friend

You don’t need perfect words or a solution. Sometimes the kindest thing is to show up, listen and sit beside someone.

Many of us freeze when someone loses a loved one. We may worry about saying the wrong thing, or wonder whether something could have been done differently. When I lost a dear friend, grief overwhelmed me. Talking with someone at The Palm reminded me that my friend had not been forgotten, and that was a gift.

It can be hard for someone who is grieving to go out, socialise or accept help. You could make them a cup of tea, listen, sit beside them or gently help them find support. Sometimes being present, and sharing a quiet moment, is enough.

Grief touches so many of us, and no one should face it alone, especially at Christmas, when an empty chair can feel very loud.

“Mourn with those who mourn.”Romans 12:15

Growth

Rebuilding confidence

Losing a job or missing out on a promotion can shake how we see ourselves. Confidence grows back through small steps.

Rebuilding confidence takes time. It rarely happens all at once; it grows through small steps, encouragement and the chance to try again. Be patient with yourself as you rediscover your strengths and begin to trust your own abilities again.

Notice the small wins: a conversation you were nervous about, an application sent, a day you got through. Like a tree by the water, growth often happens quietly, below the surface, long before anyone sees fruit.

“Like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season.”Psalm 1:3

Reflection

What the palm tree teaches us

A palm grows slowly, roots deep, bends in the storm and keeps bearing fruit. Three gentle lessons for hard seasons.

Read the reflection

Roots matter. A palm spends its early years putting down roots, deep enough to reach water others can’t find. What do you draw strength from when no one is watching?

Bending is not breaking. In a storm the palm bends, sometimes almost to the ground, and rises again when the wind passes. Feeling bowed down doesn’t mean you have failed.

Fruit takes time. The Bible says those who flourish like a palm “will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green” (Psalm 92:14). For Christians, that strength comes from being rooted in God’s love. For every woman, it is a reminder to be patient with her own growth.
